One of the simple truths of the New Testament is the teaching that in the last days men will grow more and more self-centered. They won't take the time to consider what God has to say about anything because they don't care what He has to say. Today is "all about me." That's one of the things Paul meant when he wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:
(2Ti 3:1) This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
(2Ti 3:2) For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
(2Ti 3:3) Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
(2Ti 3:4) Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
(2Ti 3:5) Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
(2Ti 3:6) For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
(2Ti 3:7) Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
I just want to briefly touch on a few points in this passage from the apostle Paul. The first is found in verse 2: "For men shall be lovers of their own selves." This speaks to America in 2010. Consider all the programs on TV that are aimed at glorifying mankind. Whether it's one of the countless "reality" shows, "American Idol" or one of the many other "talent-search" programs the point of all these programs is the glorification of self. Look at the current American president. I know that politicians in general seem a bit full of themselves, but Mr. Obama has taken the concept to a new low, using language that's intended to mislead people into thinking he's some kind of pseudo-messiah. Instead, he's just an unrepentant sinner who needs the true Messiah - Jesus Christ.
Second, in verse four he hits the source of the problem: "lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;" And that's the problem. Human nature never wants to surrender anything that might affect the feelings of pleasure. That's why it's impossible for anyone to save themselves. Apart from the working of the Holy Spirit, people will never let go of their sin. They cherish it, not realizing they're held in bondage by it (Romans 6:16). They'd rather go screaming to hell for all eternity than deny themselves for even a moment. All because they're slaves to their own wicked passions and lusts.
The third point is found in 2 Timothy 3:7: "Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." Modern man thinks he's so brilliant; so much more refined than people from earlier days. They explain away God by believing in the false religion of evolution, choosing to believe that everything came from nothing rather than recognize God's creative hand.
Modern man laughs at Bible believing Christians because we're "unscientific" yet they think that by buying "carbon credits" they can appease "mother nature" and cause the planet's temperature to go down. Let's ignore the fact that the earth hasn't been warming for over a decade and in fact is starting to cool down again -- as these cycles always go; let's ignore the fact that "brilliant" men had to cook the statistics to make an argument that otherwise doesn't exist. Instead, look at the fact that the "green" movement is really no different than old-fashioned paganism.
After all, the old pagans offered up various sacrifices to appease the "gods" and solve their earthbound problems and now the "green" movement thinks that by buying different light bulbs or using paper bags over plastic bags will somehow appease these same "gods." The devil is laughing at these folks, knowing full well that he's playing the part of the Pied Piper. Yet sinful man continues this madness because it makes himself feel good.
And the saddest part of all is that many Christians have bought into these lies the same way Eve did way back in Eden. Whether it's participating in the "green" movement or buying into the lie about "same sex marriage" people who claim to be followers of Christ should know better. And if they don't it's probably because they're not really followers of Christ at all. They ignore what God has to say, choosing to substitute their own "feelings" for the unchanging Truth of God's Word.
The truth is that marriage is ordained by God to be between one man and one woman. It doesn't matter if every judge on the face of the planet wants to believe something else, marriage is still one man and one woman. That's what God Himself has declared.
Woe unto any person or any nation that continues to shake its puny fist in the face of God, calling evil good and good evil.
