Will Jesus Sit On His Throne On Earth During The Millennial Kingdom?
3/6/2010

A couple of Believer friends of mine have been having an ongoing witnessing type Bible study with some Jehovah’s Witnesses friends of theirs. Of course, the Witnesses believe that Jesus is already on His millennial throne but it’s in Heaven. The question that came up was this: Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus will actually sit on His throne on earth during the Kingdom?

The quick answer is that there is no one verse that actually says that. That shouldn’t be surprising as God used many prophets to reveal Truth to his people. So the answer is easy to find using what the prophets have said.

The first place to start is with a hope-filled message from our Lord Jesus Himself:
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:1-3 (emphasis added)

Jesus tells us point blank that He will come again! This, by the way, is what we refer to as the “Blessed Hope.” Titus 2:13

Now let’s head over to Acts 1 and the day that Jesus ascended back to Heaven:
“And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” Acts 1:9-11 (emphasis added)

As He was taken up “a cloud received him out of their sight” and then two “men” stood next to them and let them know that Jesus was coming back the same way He left. Now that’s encouragement for Believers!

The prophet Zechariah had something to say about this return:
“Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” Zechariah 14:1-4 (emphasis added)

Here we see Jesus visibly, physically returning to the “mount of Olives”, the exact same place he left when he ascended back to Heaven (see Acts 1:12). We could stop right now and be certain that Jesus WILL indeed sit on His throne in the Kingdom. But there’s more evidence so let’s look at it.

Daniel was given a vision that he describes here for us:
“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:13-14 (emphasis added)

Daniel also reveals the following:
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.” Daniel 2:44

One would have to be completely blind to not see what the Holy Spirit is telling us through Daniel’s vision. Jesus will return and will be given a kingdom that will be everlasting. Where does a king sit within his kingdom? On a throne. Zechariah tells us He’s coming back to earth and that’s where His Kingdom will be established so that’s where His throne will be.

Jesus Himself tells us when this will happen:
“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.”
Mark 13:24-27 (emphasis added) (also see Luke 21:25-28)

His return will come AFTER the great tribulation that He describes in the verses leading up to this passage. It’s the same tribulation that we see laid out in horrifying detail in the book of Revelation. In fact, it’s at the time that Jesus reveals above that a statement from Revelation is fulfilled:
“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 11:15

What a day that will be!

The Holy Spirit offers us some truly encouraging words through Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians:
“And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.” 2 Thess. 1:7-10 (emphasis added)

He IS coming back and He WILL sit on His throne right here on earth! But we have a little more to look at so let’s move on!

John reveals an interesting verse in Revelation:
“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.” Revelation 1:7 (emphasis added)

“Every eye shall see him” seems pretty simple to understand. When He returns to set up His Kingdom it’s going to be done in front of everyone who is alive and remains at that time. That way there can be no doubt as to Who He is and Who is in charge. Can you see Jesus sitting on His millennial throne? No? That’s because He hasn’t returned yet! And how do we know that?

Well, Jesus has something to say about His return:
“And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.” Luke 17:22-24

Jesus is saying that His followers will long to see Him and yet when they don’t see, false teachers will try to deceive them by pointing to this person or that person. But Jesus says to NOT believe them because there will be no doubt about Who He is when He returns. In fact, it will be like lightning flashing across the sky! Have you seen that? I haven’t either so I know – according to Jesus’ own words – that He hasn’t returned yet and therefore He hasn’t come into His Kingdom yet.

Finally, I would encourage you to open up a Bible and read from Revelation 19:11 – 20:7. There you’ll discover that Jesus will return, will set up His throne, will rule with a rod of iron and Satan himself will be cast into a bottomless pit during this time. Why? Because Jesus’ Kingdom will be a Kingdom of lovingkindness, judgment(justice), and righteousness (see Jeremiah 9:23-24).

Is Jesus coming again? Absolutely! Will He sit on His throne on earth? Again, absolutely!

Maranatha!
