Blessed is the Nation Whose God is the LORD
7/21/2011

That’s what the Psalmist wrote in Psalm 33:12 some 3,000 years ago. For many people today, that verse is just a nice platitude; something that we Christians say to each other to make ourselves feel better about life in America in the 21st century. But the really interesting part is that it is as true today as when the psalmist wrote it!

If the LORD was really the God of America, we’d be quick to obey His law as revealed in His Word, particularly His ten commandments. Imagine what life would be like in this country if everyone kept the law of God at all times. It doesn’t take too long to realize that things would be dramatically different than they are right now. Why? Because there would be zero crime!

No murders, no violence, no theft, no adultery because there wouldn’t be any covetousness.  People would be content with the things that they have (1 Timothy 6:6, 8; Philippians 4:11). People would love others as they love themselves (Mark 12:31), meaning they’d treat others the way they themselves want to be treated (Luke 6:31). Think about that for a few moments.

Listen to what the Apostle Paul said about this:
“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” (Romans 13:8-10)

What else wouldn’t we have to deal with?

No drunk drivers or drug addicts, no gangs, no sexual assaults, no crimes of any kind. So we wouldn’t need all the various local, state and federal police agencies. That means lower taxes as we wouldn’t need any judges, lawyers, prisons or any of the other agencies and people associated with crime such corrections departments, parole officers, etc.

We wouldn’t have all the massive fraud of “entitlement” programs and government agencies that tend to perpetuate problems rather than solve them. We wouldn’t need agencies such as the EPA, FDA or any of the other regulatory agencies. Businesses would be policing themselves making sure they’re doing what’s right for people without needing some watchdog agency to tell them what to do.

We wouldn’t have to work as many hours because the cost of living would be much lower because we wouldn’t have to pay for all the “services” government provides. That would mean closer families and much less stress. It would also mean that we’d have more time and money to help others who may need help.
We wouldn’t have an illegal immigration problem because everyone would be able to settle on the right solution to the problems that would work out best for everyone.

We also wouldn’t need bloated government at every level. Most of what government does is passing laws that attempt to control the behavior of others, based on what the legislators think is proper behavior. But if everyone was following God’s Law without question, you wouldn’t need man’s laws.
So, because we’d be following God’s Law, we’d have His blessing on our land as well. That means that the ground would produce bumper crops of food. Diseases would be minimized or even become non-existent; meaning no more need for legions of doctors along with hospitals and everything else associated with the healthcare industry. That would solve some of the current problems facing America in 2011 and beyond.

Maybe if Christians started standing up for, and speaking about the need for, righteousness and seeking His Kingdom above all our human wants (Matthew 6:33), we’d see God move in this country and world once again. Perhaps people would recognize that sin has created a huge gulf between men and God and they’d see the need to cry out in repentance, seeking God’s forgiveness.

“If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;  (14)  If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  (15)  Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.” (2 Chronicles 7:13-15)

As verse 15 says, God’s just waiting to hear from us…

What a thought.
